Heal With Teal

On Monday night, September 24th, the JCC on Manhattan’s Upper West Side was the site of Heal with Teal, an evening of education, enlightenment and entertainment about ovarian cancer. The event was attended by nearly 250 people, some of whom have had ovarian cancer and others who, like myself, want to learn as much as possible about this silent killer.
Susie Essman was the host of the evening, (her heart is as big as Susie Greenberg’s mouth, her alter ego on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”). Doctors Anne Marie Beddoe of Mt. Sinai Hospital and David Spriggs of Memorial Sloane Kettering spoke about detection and advancements in treatment of ovarian cancer. The highlight of the event, however, was the story of one woman’s journey through her diagnosis to treatment and subsequent good health after her illness. This was the story of Shirley Kohn, a dear friend of mine and senior staff member at the JCC.
Following the speeches was a forum of complimentary care practitioners and a dessert buffet with delicious organic dark chocolate fondue and anti-oxidant martinis! Everyone was invited to interact one-on-one with specialists ranging from a holistic doctor to an acupuncturist and cranial sacral masseuse, all of whom help maintain the health and wellness of those afflicted with ovarian cancer.
A successful event on all counts- information was passed amongst friends and money was raised to be split amongst the JCC and OCRF for their wonderful work. If you are interested in supporting this worthwhile cause, White + Warren is also selling a limited number of teal cashmere wraps online with 50% of the proceeds being donated to both organizations.
