Last evening as I was coming home, disposable bottle of water in tow, my doorman — as sort of his own survey — asked me why I chose to buy water. When I said I really just buy it for the bottle and then refill and reuse the bottles with filtered tap water he was very pleased. Then, all in ten minutes, I learned of his concern for the preservation of the Chesapeake Bay, waste management by the meatpacking industry, and the questionable effects of New York City spending millions of dollars on improving dog parks while people are going hungry on the streets. To sum up, he expressed his concern about the sustainability of our current system, and how we can go on as we are if we aren’t planning for a livable environment even in our own lifetimes. So today I dedicate all my own Earth Day efforts to Curtis, the fine night-time door attendant at my building. And when I told him I was going to blog about our conversation for Earth Day, he told me no problem, he already had it covered in his own blog.
