Valentine’s Day Memories

Valentines Day Memories

Valentine’s day is a very special day to me. In my family growing up Dad gifted Mom, Mom gifted Dad, the girls gifted Dad and the “boy” gave to Mom! We all celebrated: a box of candy, a white teddy bear with pink ribbons, sometimes red socks or pink undies and of course special cards for all!!! Sometimes the wrappings were the best part, re-using the red ribbons and boxes from Christmas was a definite! With busy schedules it was not easy to get all seven of us around the round kitchen table for dinner, but this was a night when we gathered to have some fun. Happy Valentines Day to all of you!

It’s not too late to give the perfect present to that special someone.

Barb at Large: a la Marais

Marais Paris France

I arrived in Paris late Wednesday evening and despite my immense fatigue from lack of sleep election night (we are 6 hours ahead here and I was glued to CNN) I felt instantly rejuvenated. The energy and beauty of Paris are one and the same. For this trip I decided to stay in the Marais as it is brimming with creativity. There are numerous little designer boutiques as well as better known brands throughout the area.As for my hotel, I thought I arrived at a party upon entering the door. Tons of well dressed people, a curtain, and lots of noise. A fun vibe for sure but not necessarily what was needed. I was given a quiet room, thankfully. There is no room number, only a name. I am staying in Giovanni! There are no keys for the door, the lock is your fingerprint. And lastly, the pint-sized room has a choice of 7 lighting colors. Do not ask why, all I know is I’m a basic clear light kind of gal. I like my green and blue in clothes, thank you!

Barb at Large: Taking it to the Streets

Milan Fashion Trends

Walk don’t run. Strolling the narrow streets of Milan is the only way to move, a bit of anathema for this New Yorker who is used to moving quickly. (Not to mention a relief for my feet which were perched in high heeled boots.) That said, slowing down allows for gazing in front of the store windows taking in all the details. It was also possible to literally stand in one place and look at several shops at once comparing trends.

Barb at Large: Touchdown in Milan

10 Corso Como

You know you’re in a well suited profession when you…

Fly to Europe on an overnight flight and barely sleep. Arrive in London, change terminals and take another flight to Milan, then a train into the city and lastly a taxi to your hotel. It’s been 18 hours since leaving NY and it’s pouring rain, but none of that matters. Why, any normal person might ask? Answer, because mecca awaits you in the form of 10 Corso Como!

This independently owned multi brand store is nestled down an alleyway on a small street far from the main shopping area of Milan, where one designer flagship after another creates the landscape. This one-of-a kind store is lovingly and brilliantly edited season after season with big name designers mixed in with contemporary brands at considerably lower price points.

Being in 10 Corso Como is an experience which requires time. Rushing through would mean simply missing the point. It is a place to savour and appreciate the painstaking effort put into creating an environment. Everywhere you look there are unique and wonderful items for sale, most often things not seen elsewhere. There are no rules in Corso Como, only choices.
